SMS Hosts TPMA to Explore Starch-Based Excipient Potential for Thailand’s Pharma Industry

On 22 April 2026, SMS welcomes members of the Thai Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (TPMA) for an exclusive seminar and site visit aimed at exploring potential collaborations to strengthen Thailand’s pharmaceutical industry through locally produced starch-based excipients.

The seminar is organized with the objective of empowering Thai manufacturers of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients to enhance domestic pharmaceutical capabilities and improve accessibility to high-quality medicines and supplements for the Thai population. As a TPMA member, SMS reaffirms its commitment to quality and innovation, underscored by its certification under Excipact—making it the first company in Thailand to achieve this internationally recognized standard.

The session opens with remarks from Dr. Werawat Lertwanawatana, Chief Executive Officer of SMS Corporation, who shares the company’s six-year journey in developing starch-based excipients for pharmaceutical applications. He highlights the proven performance of SMS products, which are comparable to leading global excipient solutions.
“While our initial goal is to serve as a local producer, we are confident that our products are ready to compete in the global market,” he states.

Following the opening, SMS starch specialists—Dr. Siwarutt Boonyarattanakalin, Assistant Innovation Director; Dr. Waesarat Soontornchaiboon, Product Innovation Manager; and Tunyada Laemphu, Senior Product Researcher Pharmacist—deliver a technical presentation titled “Integrated Starch-Based Excipient Ecosystem for Direct Compression, PVP-Free Wet Granulation, and Tapiopharm Applications.” The session provides in-depth insights into SMS’s product portfolio—DAVAMED Series and TAPIOPHARM Series—and encourages interactive discussions with participants.

The visit continues with a live demonstration session, where attendees observe the performance of DAVAMED C1, showcasing its excellent flowability and tablet hardness. Participants are also given a guided tour of SMS’s excipient manufacturing facilities, along with its Innovation Center, which covers food, industrial, bioplastic, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic applications.

Despite being a relatively new player in the pharmaceutical excipient sector, SMS remains committed to becoming a trusted partner and a leading choice for high-performance excipients, supporting the long-term growth and global competitiveness of the Thai pharmaceutical industry.
